The CDC has reported over 170 flu-related deaths for the 2017-2018 flu season. With a majority of these deaths occurring in children who did not receive the flu vaccination, the CDC has recommended the optional use of intranasal live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV4). The CDC had not recommended this type of administration for the past two flu seasons due to ineffective results. However, the LAIV4 FluMist has been reformulated and will continue to be monitored by the CDC for efficacy.
