The CDC has reported over 170 flu-related deaths for the 2017-2018 flu season. With a majority of these deaths occurring in children who did not receive the flu vaccination, the CDC has recommended the optional use of intranasal live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV4). The CDC had not recommended this type of administration for the past two flu seasons due to ineffective results. However, the LAIV4 FluMist has been reformulated and will continued to be monitored by the CDC for efficacy.

Preliminary results from INSYS Therapeutics are showing advances in their new intranasal epinephrine, with a similar bioavailability to the popular intramuscular EpiPen. President and CEO of INSYS, Saeed Motahari commented: "Given that epinephrine is on the FDA shortage list, we look forward to working closely with the Agency to determine the optimal path to making this investigational novel drug delivery system available."
